Reflections Dictated During Wartime

It’s a wonderful thing to be able to write without using a pen. I’m quite skilled at handling all sorts of things—machinery, vehicles, tools—and I’m even reasonably proficient with computers. But I must admit, writing solely by dictation is a truly fantastic feeling. I know, I know—some might say, “Well, these tools have been available to everyone for a long time now.” Up until recently, I’ve had other things to attend to; I’m still working, but I now have much more free time to jot down some thoughts to publish on a blog.
We must be very careful; the perception of life has shifted so drastically that, in a short span of time, we have gone from believing we were living in an advanced society—one striving for overall social progress—to facing a potential nuclear threat. Such a scenario wasn’t even seriously contemplated; we had to watch “The Day After” just to grasp how horrific it would be if someone were to press those infamous buttons in the briefcases we’ve heard so much about. Wars—one after another—fill our news broadcasts; fortunately, they cannot be hidden, yet we seem less concerned about them than we are when our national soccer team fails to qualify for the World Cup. We only think about these conflicts when fuel prices rise, and the war in Ukraine is discussed primarily because it’s right on our doorstep. I am not a pacifist, but I am, most certainly, a citizen of the world.
When I was young, I really enjoyed discussing politics and social issues, especially with people who held different views from my own. Now, almost without realizing it, I have—for the past few years—decided to stop voting altogether. I must admit, albeit reluctantly, that those who told me most politicians care only about their own hefty salaries and power were right.
